Course #74: Landscape Painting II : In the Foreground

The second session of landscape painting in oils emphasizes brushwork as it relates to landscape painting. Through demo and group critique you will learn to use under painting and texture to paint foreground areas effectively and understand how use foreground to create a more effective composition and develop your personal painting style.
Materials: Landscape reference photographs, one or more large format canvas 16x20 or larger; half dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, size 2, 4, and 6. One medium size palette knife; small pointed round brush for detail size 2-4. Paper towels; odorless turpentine; cup for turpentine, large wooden palette; oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Lemon, Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Permalba White, Gamblin Radiant White, Cadmium orange, Raw umber, liquin. Additional supplies will be discussed at first class meeting.

ENROLLMENT: Art classes are limited to approximately 18-20 students for adult classes and 12-15 students for children’s classes. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.
CLASS POLICY: Visitors are not allowed in the classroom. If you wish to sit in on a class, you must enroll.
SCHOOL REFUND POLICY: No exceptions made. A full refund will be given only if a class, workshop or tour is cancelled, filled prior to the receipt of your registration, or if the teacher does not accept you as a student. A credit for another class in the next Athenaeum’s School of the Arts season will be extended to students who are unable to attend and have notified the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts staff at least one week prior to the beginning of the class.
CANCELLATIONS: The Athenaeum reserves the right to cancel classes and workshops prior to or at the beginning of the first class meeting. A full refund will be given automatically or tuition may be applied towards another course during the current session depending on availability.
