MORE INFORMATION The series opens with an Athenaeum debut on February 7 by the acclaimed Los Angeles-based jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek, with Josh Nelson on piano, Hamilton Price on bass, and Zach Harmon on drums. A graduate of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute and USC’s Thornton School of Music, Gazarek has been turning musical heads since her 2007 debut album, “Return to You,” featuring her winning interpretations of the jazz standards as well as contemporary and original songs. The Los Angeles Times wrote, “In a very crowded field, she may well turn out to be the next important jazz singer… Like her most illustrious predecessors, she demonstrated a remarkable capacity to transform everything she sang into the combination of unique personal expressiveness, rhythmic swing and inventive phrasing.” Regarding her 2012 CD, “Blossom and Bee,” JazzTimes commented, “Everything about this terrific recording shouts talent, beauty, rhythmic and melodic wit, and spirit… Backed by a sizzling rhythm section, Gazarek, a lyric sorceress, flies through it all. Hers is a beautiful spider-silk voice – solid and savvy, if not overpowering and dark – made for musical phrase, word-play, and for restrained swing. Displaying alls-to-the-wall confidence to leap, dive and skip over melody and yet hold her own over the top-notch rhythm section, Gazarek is a gem.”
